Concept

Starring Dakota Fanning and Robert De Niro this psychological horror is a real treat to watch. While taking the old urban legend of twisted imaginary friends this film throwa a few elements into the mix to produce a small turn on the formula.

9 year old Emily is having a bad time, she is moving out of New York with her psychologist father to Upstate New York. As if moving isn't difficult enough the move is spurned on by the suicide of her mother. Being a quiet child going through an unbearably tragic hardship, she develops an imaginary friend named Charlie.

David is taken back with the conjuring of an imaginary friend but settles it as a grieving process. He suffers nightmares about his wife and to top it off the imaginary friend Charlie has drowned the cat in the bath, according to Emily. The bath being where, Emily's mother committed suicide. And then Charlie starts playing games...

Review

This film has extra content to it than the imaginary evil friend, on top of this you have neighbours who lost their own child, a child who looks similar to Emily. A relationship between David and one of the neighbours and a colleague to the rescue. The film has a great ambiguous ending and is just enjoyable to watch.

There are actually five different endings to this movie, all of them involving Emily. The Theatrical international version has a different ending but doesnt stray too far from the ending actually used. If you have the DVD you can watch all the endings.

The film won two awards, MTV Movie Awards for 'Best Frightened Horror' and the Golden Trailer Award for 'Best Horror'. Watch this film, don't play hide and seek with it.
