Concept
A young woman looking after her sickly younger brother named Iris struggles with finding a bone marrow donor to save him. She is then introduced to highly wealthy philanthropist Shepard Lambrick through her Oncologist Dr. Barden. trapped in a desperate financial situation Shepard tells her he can give money to her and save her brother... if she partakes in a party game after dinner at his mansion and wins. She agrees, and turns up with a flurry of different guests, From a gambler to conspirator to war veteran. They all enjoy a delicious meal of steak and fois gras. And this is where the story begins a dark turn.
Iris is a vegan, and refuses to eat the meat. Shepard offers her money to eat the steak, she refuses. Eventually he raises the (ahem) stakes high enough where she eats it, feeling disgusted with herself. Shepard then proceeds to laugh at her. Opposite from her - a past alcoholic conspiracy theorist refuses to drink a glass of wine. Again he is offered money to drink, and only does eventually when a bottle of whiskey is in his face for a large cash offering.
So the party game is already morally questioning, but as it goes on it gets darker and darker, Shepard's butler and his men are brutal. Knowing they are trapped each individual tries to look out for each other, or themselves. Meanwhile Dr Barden attempts to save Iris. All involved knowing only one of them can escape...
Review
This is an excellent film to me. The pacing is excellent, the camera angles and music make it what it is, When there are fast paced camera angles during tense scenes and the music builds up it's quite an exhilarating rush to watch. You root for our protagonist because she's no superhero or special agent. She's just an everyday person trapped in a bad situation she put herself into. The other characters at the table you don't get to know much about and like most slashers are killed off with little to no character development.
But what you do get is a brilliant psychological horror mixed in with some harsh brutality and an aesthetically pleasing film to literally die for. The use of colours in this film is so intense, so dark and sophisticated it's just plain excellence at it's best. I urge you to track this film down and watch it immediately.
If you know the ending you have a duty not to tell anyone else how it ends, it will leave you a bit more empty than before. It implies the ending but good god how it comes out of nowhere and completely unexpected. Track this film down.
If you are a fan of the Saw Franchise, psychological horror, slashers and films with a edge-of-your-seat plot look no further.
